There remain less than 6 hours until the series finale of LOST. There are no words to describe how momentous this occasion is for a great many people across the country. Maybe even across the world. In honor of this once-in-a-lifetime event, I’m going to do something once-in-a-blog’s-lifetime right now: I’m going to repost something I’ve already written. So, here it is, the music of LOST in one easy to download mix tape. I’ve made some additions (no subtractions), and replaced that God awful version of “Ride Captain Ride” with Will fucking Ferrel speaking over it with the original 1970 single version. You’re welcome. 01. Joe Purdy – Wash Away (Reprise) – Season 1, Episode 3 – Featured at the end of the episode when Hurley listens to it on his CD player.
02. Willie Nelson – Are You Sure? – Season 1, Episode 6 – Featured at the end of the episode when Hurley listens to it on his CD player.
03. Charles Trenet – La Mer – Season 1, Episode 12 – Sayid asks Shannon to translate notes made by Danielle Rousseau on her map. Shannon recognizes the lyrics to the song as her notes. “La Mer” is one of three examples in the series where a diagetic song is incorporated into the musical score, thereby transforming it into non-diagetic music. The other two examples of this are both included in this mix tape. A free Swan Fungus t-shirt goes to the first person who can comment or e-mail me the names of the other two songs.
04. “Mama” Cass Elliott – Make Your Own Kind Of Music – Season 2, Episode 1 – Used three times in the series, but most memorably during the first episode of season two, where Desmond plays most of the song on his record player inside the Swan station.
05. Patsy Cline – Walkin’ After Midnight – Season 2, Episode 9 – LOST loves Patsy Cline. This song was heard three different times during season two. The first instance was when Kate played it on the Swan record player. It then appears on two different car radios later in the season, one of which is also heard by Kate, in a flashback.
06. Glen Miller – Moonlight Serenade – Season 2, Episode 13 – Heard on the radio when Sayid and Hurley are trying to find a signal at the Arrow station. Later heard again by Jack on his car radio when his ex-wife is embracing the guy she left him for. Ouch. Bonus LOST factoid! Glenn Miller disappeared in 1944 while flying from England to Paris. Neither his plane nor any wreckage were ever found. Hmm…
07. The Blues Image – Ride Captain Ride – Season 5, Episode 9 – Featured during the episode “Namaste,” it plays during the orientation party for new DHARMA recruits Jack, Kate and Hurley.
08. Otis Redding – These Arms Of Mine – Season 2, Episode 19 – Heard twice in the same episode. Once on Rose’s car stereo during a flashback, then later in the Swan station on the record player. During the second occurrence, there is an accompanying montage of Eko & Charlie building the church, Clarie and Aaron, Libby and Hurley, Rose and Bernard, Sawyer and Vincent. I’d posit that this was Rose and Bernard’s “song” if it weren’t for the fact that he proposed to her in front of a violin troupe playing Frank Sinatra’s “The Right Girl For Me” in the same episode.
09. Petula Clark – Downtown – Season 3, Episode 1 – This one too has appeared a couple times throughout the show, but the most memorable moment was during the opening of season three when Juliet played it before her book club meeting. Ironically, it later appeared in another Juliet episode during a car ride she shared with her sister. This or “Make Your Own Kind Of Music” would be my most memorable non-Michael Giacchino LOST musical moment.
10. Muddy Waters – I Feel Like Going Home – Season 3, Episode 3 – Featured during the episode “Further Instructions,” where it was heard on the radio in John Locke’s car.
11. Three Dog Night – Shambala – Season 3, Episode 10 – Amazing moment when this song suddenly starts to play upon Hurley starting up the DHARMA van for the first time. The very beginning of the song is actually heard earlier in the episode during one of Hurley’s flashbacks. Several episodes later, it’s heard again when we see the scene that occurred years earlier in the van between Ben and his father.
12. John Philip Sousa – The Thunderer – Season 3, Episode 1 – This plays a few times in season three, it’s the song that is played in Sawyer’s cage whenever he receives a fish biscuit.
13. Buddy Holly – Everyday – Season 4, Episode 11 – Featured in the episode “Cabin Fever,” at the very beginning, when we see a young Emily Locke preparing for a date in her bedroom. Bonus non-LOST related “Everyday” occurrence: The song was also heard last week at the Sonic in Duarte while we were waiting for our food.
14. Willie Nelson – Shotgun Willie – Season 5, Episode 1 – Great opening scene with Dr. Pierre Chang going about his morning routine. Until, of course, the record starts skipping. Irony alert! Daniel Faraday will later use the metaphor of a record skipping to explain how the island is traveling through time.
15. Dawn (with Tony Orlando) – Candida – Season 5, Episode 8 – Hilariously used at the beginning of the episode called “LeFleur” when two DHARMA workers named Jerry and Rosie are dancing in a security center at the Barracks.
16. Les McCann – Compared To What – Season 2, Episode 17 – From “Lockdown”. This is playing on the hatch record player when Locke is exercising.
17. Billie Holiday – I Can’t Give You Anything But Love, Baby – Season 5, Episode 10 – A version of this song plays on the old gramophone player belonging to Oldham, the creepy dude who lives on the outskirts of DHARMA-ville and doses Sayid with some awesome hallucinogens (LSD?). This isn’t the exact version of the song he’s listening to, but it’s close enough to serve its purpose.
18. Frederic Chopin – Fantaisie-Impromptu In C# Minor – Season 5, Episode 14 – Featured during the Dnaiel Faraday-centric episode “The Variable.” It was played on the piano by Daniel as a young boy, and then again in 2004 just before he leaves on the freighter headed to the island. Daniel plays the middle section of the piano piece. The classic song “i’m Always Chasing Rainbows” is an adaptation of the melody with lyrics about a person’s failure to find happiness.
19. Drifters – Up On The Roof – Season 2, Episode 4 – From “Everybody Hates Hugo”. This is playing in the hatch station while Hurley and Rose take inventory of all the food in the pantry.
20. The Seeds – Pushin’ Too Hard – Season 2, Episode 16 – Heard on the Swan record player during the episode entitled “The Whole Truth.” I wonder if this is what Radzinsky listened to right before he blew his brains out all over the Swan station’s ceiling.
21. Sergei Rachmaninoff – Prelude in C# Minor – Season 4, Episode 9 – Used subtly in a classic scene. Ben is actually playing this on the piano when Locke comes to tell him that the phone rang. Ben stands up, opens the piano seat, and pulls out a shotgun. Amazing.
22. Slim Smith & The Uniques – My Conversation – Season 2, Episode 4 – Also from the episode “Everybody Hates Hugo,” this song plays in the hatch during Hurley’s opening dream sequence.
23. Patsy Cline – Three Cigarettes (In An Ashray) – Season 5, Episode 16 – From the finale of season five, this song was heard in the convenience store where Kate tried to steal a New Kids On The Block lunchbox. This is where she is touched by Jacob, who showed up just in time to prevent her from getting in trouble. The lyrics that are audible during this scene include the intriguing couplet “Then a stranger came along / And everything went wrong.”
24. Perry Como – Catch A Falling Star – Multiple Episodes – Most memorably during Season 6, Episode 6 (“Sundown”), when Claire sings a creepy rendition of this song as she waits for the Man In Black to free her from the hole in the temple.
