It started with fifty people lined up around the corner of the building, shuffling through the front door one after the other to the sounds of the Benny Hill theme song. It was a hilarious and fun introduction to what was a crazy-successful National Record Store Day. Within five minutes of opening this morning, our selection of 60 different exclusive, limited-edition LPs, CDs and DVDs was obliterated. And that was in spite of our firm “limit one per customer” rule. What’s more, we provided our clientele with more than just new releases. We offered discounts up to half-off everything in the store. I won’t know precisely how much business we did until tomorrow, but considering there were never less than 50 people in the store at any given time I’d say the result will be great.
Of course, I also spent a pretty penny buying records today. I wasn’t as crazy about the exclusive materials as I was about a couple things I’ve had my eye on for the past few weeks. An original UK copy of T. Rex’s Slider that sounds unbelievably good, a bunch of very cheap (as in less than $2) Thin White Rope LPs, Talk Talk, Monkees, Vetiver, Upsetters, Soul Asylum, The The…all less than $5 a piece. I also finally got around to purchasing a copy of J.G. Thirlwell’s music for The Venture Bros., which I can’t wait to hear for the first time. Oh, and I’d like to state for the record that Nicky D’s in Silver Lake might have the best toppings-based pies in East LA. That “diablo pizza” with shrimp was out-of-this-world good. It might even be better than the “pesto bravo” with sausage, garlic cloves, sun-dried tomatoes and goat cheese. It’s a close call.
So, I’ve been up on my feet since about 7 this morning, and I don’t really want to sit here staring at my computer screen any longer. I’m going to have a drink and relax. I’ll try to post a good mix tape tomorrow. Let me know what all you collector scum did to celebrate this silly, manufactured holiday in your town or city. Any good deals? Anyone overseas nab that limited Neu! 12″? If so, I might want one…
