This space-y rock group features Adam Forkner of Yume Bitsu and Dick Baldwin, Daron Gardner and Aaron Snow of Landing. They are propelled by the Neu-ish drumming of Phil Jenkins. I was introduced to them — as I was with Yume Bitsu — by Ian. Their sound can be boiled down to wah wah and loud amps, but that would be an insult to all the other amazing aspects of their songs. The interplay between different tones (the various levels of distortion, fuzz and crystalline clean guitar parts) are what truly enrich this album. The King Beneath The Mountain is a rolling, epic druggy passages blanketed in sheets of white noise. The best part of any Surface Of Eceon record (by the way, the spelling can change from Eceon to Eceyon or Ecyeon on a whim) is the mythology behind the title and songs. There are stories of planets ruled by grasshoppers. On their second album, Dragyn, the band members go by pseduonyms like “Lyfeforce” and “Eceyonic Man.” I guess what I’m saying is, you should probably to bring yourself to a more highly enlightened state before you “enter the vessyl of sound” and voyage to the outer reaches of Dryystn, to the surface of Eceon.
And if you like these albums, I highly recommend anything Yume Bitsu or Landing ever recorded, but most especially the former’s Auspicious Winds and the latter’s Oceanless.
