Nina Nastasia / Huun Huur Tu – Live At Peel Acres (June 10th, 2004)

Nina Nastasia

This is one of the most stunning Peel Sessions I have ever heard, and God knows I’ve heard a lot of them, from official releases to unofficial bootlegs. For this live performance, Nina is accompanied by Sayan Bapa and Kaigal-ool Khovalyg of Huun Huur Tu and Jerry Leonard. Tuvan throat singing and an Eastern instruments like the igil flesh out Nina’s beautiful and haunting songs. I’ve long referenced the New York-based singer as my favorite female songwriter. Hearing her in such an intimate setting, aided by red wine and a unique backing band is a real treat. A couple of the songs performed here have not been released on studio albums as of yet, but hopefully Nina’s next release — which I hope will arrive soon — will feature stellar cuts like “Take Your Time”. That said, if you want to pour yourself a glass of red wine and dim the lights, I think you will find very quickly that this is a masterful in-studio session, and one of the more outstanding Peel Sessions ever recorded.

The session was recorded on June 10th, 2004. It was produced by Louise Kattenhorn and engineered by Andy Rogers.
