Alex Dreier – What Is A Jew?

A brief note on the 2nd Annual Swan Fungus Holiday Contestâ„¢: Today Nicci and I spent the afternoon making 20 new t-shirts. If any of you want to take part in the contest but don’t want to spend time making your own shirt, you can e-mail me and I will give you details on how to get a shirt. I figured more people would compete if I helped you out and did most of the leg-work for you. Basically, you’ll e-mail me a size preference (M, L, XL) and then you’ll PayPal me shipping costs, and I will send you a shirt. Hopefully, that shirt will wind up on a celebrity, who you will have to photograph wearing the shirt. Remember the rules? Okay good. Now onto the blog!

I was alerted to this record the other day while at work, and instantly fell in love with it. Tonight being the…I don’t know, 7th night of Hanukkah…(?) I figured this is the perfect time to share this straight-from-vinyl transfer. I’m pretty sure it dates from the late ’60s (Dreier had a book published in 1967 that was also called “What Is A Jew?”). It’s a hilarious — at least to me — five minute piece, split into two parts, with a surprise ending! Kind of…

The cover states, “‘What Is Jew?’ reflects the deep perception and the humanistic approach that has marked the new dispatches, essays and commentaries of Hawaiian-born, Stanford-educated Alex Dreier over the past 25 years. Broadcasting nation-wide on radio and television 7 days a week with news and commentary programs for the American Broadcasting Company, and Metro-media Television, Dreier is one of the busiest men in the news media and is known as the “MAN ON THE GO.” One might well ask, ‘What is an Alex Dreier?’ One might be a warm and human reporter; a commentator of unusual insight, endowed with an apparently endless capacity for logical analysis and good humor; a multi-talented man of many facets, with a deep and profound respect for the human equation; a rare blend of intellectualism and talent for cutting through to the heart of complex stories and situations. The Dreier approach to life has been to take it…but not himself…seriously, and to do so in an entertaining and informative way. That, perhaps, is why the man remains so pre-eminent in his field, and why his material continues to be as fresh as tomorrow’s newspaper…as thought-provoking as the philosopher’s fillip…and as durable as his career as an observer…critic…and chronicler of our times.” – Don Bresnahan
