Not to be confused with M83! This is totally different (and better).
This album, originally released in 1999, was one of the first drone recordings I ever heard. After hearing this album by M87 and Aidan Baker’s At The Fountain Of Thirst, I began to discover and appreciate more experimental drone music. Notcilucent Threnody was described by my mother during a 6-hour drive to Vermont in 2002 as, “Scary haunted house music.” She clearly didn’t appreciate the celestial aspects of the record. Huge crushing waves of static, transmissions from beyond the stars, and deep symphonic drones that recall mosaic-like, glistening waters or ominous whirring winds. The craziest part of this album is that you assume all these sounds being processed are originating on a keyboard (see: “M8 Lagoon Nebula”), but the liner notes state specifically that there are no keyboards or synthesizers involved. I’d love to know how this was recorded. If you like dark ambient, drone, or 4am druggy sleep records, you really can’t do much better than Noctilucent Threnody.
In case you’re wondering, “noctilucent” is a descriptive word for a high-altitude cloud, and “threnody” means “lamnet.” A perfect title for such a far-out, foreboding album.
