Cosmic Michael – Cosmic Michael [Private (Bliss, 1969)]

This one came into the store last week. I don’t know too much about it, but the basics are that Cosmic Michael is a “real people” record by a guy who calls himself — wait for it — Cosmic Michael. The only thing is, he’s a little too talented for it to be a legitimate “real people” record. There are melodies and decent songwriting involved. Michael first lived in New York, where he recorded this album, and got by selling copies of it on the street. Then he moved to Los Angeles, where he recorded a second album, and got by selling copies on the street. Word has it he also made poster art for local concerts, but word also has it they were really bad.

This was released on a label called Bliss in 1989. It featured a paste-on cover, and came with one of Cosmic Michael’s posters. During his theme song (yes, he recorded a theme song) he all but declares he’s freaked out after taking too much acid. He mentions a chemical change occurring in his own brain, as he sings about himself in the third person. What a guy!

I don’t know that I would recommend this as a great album like some other private press releases I’ve shared in the past, but it’s one of those that are worth hearing just to say you’ve heard it. Cosmic Michael is still around, I think, though he hasn’t released anything since 1970 as far as I know.
