This was one of the first Digitalis Industries releases (DIGI022) I heard. It was limited to 1000 copies, housed in a beautiful multi-colored fabric sleeve with a small xeroxed insert. I think it came out in ’06? It was released during a flurry of excellent releases by Uton (Mystery Revolution), Tom Carter (Glyph) and James Blackshaw (Sunshrine), which made me a firm believer in Digitalis as an amazing underground record label.
What began as a duo (Antony Milton, Nether Dawn & Campbell Kneale, Birchville Cat Motel) became a quartet (Richard Francis, Eso Steel & James Kirk, Sandoz Lab Technicians). The self-titled album was recorded in an abandoned bunker with only portable, battery-powered instruments. Industrial bliss, raga drones and metal-on-metal scratching and howling, this album is a powerful slab of experimental goodness. The sound of these compositions is like smoke rising from some unholy charred remains. The smells of a forgotten underground chamber can be sensed just as easily as the absence of light which blanketed the recording session.
If you enjoy this, I recommend scouring the Internet or eBay for the following albums:
Birchville Cat Motel – Beautiful Speck Triumph
Sandoz Lab Technicians – S/T
Eso Steel – Ina
