Hari inquired about what I was listening to a few nights ago, so I figured I would post this. He liked the Anna Black record, so if he likes this one too we’ll know he has “good taste.” Otherwise, well…I think we all know what happens to those who don’t see eye-to-eye with my recommendations, right?
Gandalf recorded one studio album during their brief existence, a self-titled LP for Capitol that was recorded in ’67 and released in ’69. The band was called Rahgoos, but the label made them change their name. What’s worse, when the record was finally released (after sitting around for two years) Capitol shipped out a ton of copies with the wrong record inside the sleeve. Nice going, Einsteins. Original copies are thus hard to come by (a sealed one with a punch-hole in the cover recently sold for $380), but Scorpio and Sundazed have both given this lost gem the re-issue treatment in recent years.
AllMusic compares the band to The Left Banke and gives the record 3 stars on its retarded rating scale, but since I want people to actually listen to it, I’ll go out on a limb and say that Gandalf sound like a more-proggressive sounding Zombies, and I’ll give it four stars out of five. They cover “Nature Boy,” which was written by Eden Ahbez but made famous by Nat King Cole, and some Tim Hardin songs. I think Gandalf is a stone groove. So too should you.
