The Angelic Process was a self-described “ambient drone metal” duo from Macon, Georgia. Formed in 1999, they create beautiful, heavy, VU’s-always-in-the-red compositions. “Gorgeous swirling black ambiance, massive crushing metallic pummel, soaring majestic melodies, the sound somehow heavy and brutal, but washed out and gauzy, a thick My Bloody Valentine haze draped over everything, voices drift amidst the buzz like paper angels dropped into a roaring fire. Everything glistening and sparkling, glimmering and shimmering, then roaring and grinding and washing over you like some suffocating black tide.” (Aquarius Records). Not just MBV, but The Swans, Neurosis, Earth and even Godspeed You! Black Emperor can be detected in their stunning songs.
In October of 2007, Kris Angylus (guitar, vocals, drums) announced that the band was put on indefinite hiatus. A break in his hand did not heal correctly, and left him unable to make music. Even with surgery, Angylus wrote, it was unknown whether or not he would be able to continue the band. In a final public message to his fans and friends, Kris wrote, “This is the hardest thing I have ever had to do in my life. It feels like a part of me is dying. I am sorry to everyone who loves this band as much a we do. I’m sorry to everyone who will never see us play live. I’m sorry to everyone…” In April 0f 2008, Kris succumbed to his depression and chose to take his own life. He’s survived by his wife (and musical partner) M.
You would be wise, if you have not yet heard The Angelic Process, to seek out their recorded output. Much of it has gone out of print, but I’ll do my best to share everything I have in the near future. For now, we’ll start with one of the highlights of their discography, Coma Waering
