In A World Without….Don LaFontaine

Allow me, if you will, to begin with this notice: John in Ohio, your ‘Thank You’ package was mailed yesterday. I’m going to try and ship three more today. As previously stated, I’m finishing all the domestic mailings before the international ones, because those will be a tad more expensive and I’m waiting on my next paycheck to ensure I can get them all shipped and still have cheap, greasy food to shove in my mouth for the rest of the week.

Don LaFontaine died yesterday. You might remember him from every movie trailer and television commercial that’s been made since the mid-1960s. He voiced over 5,000 films and over 100,000 TV spots. He had one of the most recognizable voices in the world. And now he’s dead.

My two favorite Don LaFontaine moments, of course, are as follows:

“Genuine Lullabelle: From Shellac’s most recent LP, Excellent Italian Greyhound. I wonder if they had to pay him for his participation? I don’t know why, but the Wikipedia entry doesn’t mention his appearance in the song, it only mentions Ken Nordine.

5 Guys In A Limo – A video clip featuring five of the greatest voice over actors in America, featuring Don, John Leader, Al Chalk, Mark Elliot and Nick Tate. Quite humorous. Plus Tate gets to say, “Hung like a horse,” which he probably never got to say when he was recording the trailers for Jurassic Park or Mission: Impossible. You would be wise to watch it here, through the magic of this handy-dandy YouTube link.

We’ll miss you, Don.

Last — but certainly not least — I ask that everyone leave a comment wishing Nicci well, as she has undergone a minor surgical procedure today. She’s resting up at a care center (and then at a hotel with her mom), and should be home this weekend.
