On Insomnia And Pizza

Asleep by 11:30, awake at 5:00am, and unable to fall back asleep until two-and-a-half hours later. Alarm woke me again at 9:15. These are the days of my life. I drugged myself with more Benadryl last night, and it did the trick in helping me get to sleep, but once I awoke (following an insane dope-dream involving mafia hitmen, a rock island in the middle of the ocean, and an ending complete with film credits!) I found it nearly impossible to fall back asleep. That’s how it’s been most of the week. Luckily I only had to work 11-4 today, and I’m off tomorrow, so I have until noon Friday to figure out how to get a night of good sleep. As always, your suggestions are welcome.

I’m thinking about making some calls to see if I can get into freelance script reading. It pays terribly, but why not? I read Tom’s screenplay last month and wrote out several pages of comments detailing the strengths and weaknesses of the script. It wasn’t hard, he liked my ideas and understood my criticisms, and I liked analyzing and critiquing it. I think my experiences with interviewing and transcribing thousands of pages of conversations has given me a great sense of how good, natural dialog should sound. I’ve seen enough terrible films and read/written enough stories to know what is cliche and how to present “old” themes in a new way. There’s worse things I could be doing with my free time, and I’m probably doing them all right now.

For dinner tonight I took Sari to Mr. Pizza Factory, which I’m convinced is one of the five best pizza joints in this pizza-hellhole that is Los Angeles. Granted, I’ve only eaten there twice, and I’ve ordered the same pie each time, but it’s so good and so different that their menu has to be commended. It’s a Korean slant on pizza, which means all the pies have weird combinations of toppings that one would not ordinarily find on a pizza. Somehow, it works. The pies are cooked well, and you have a host of options regarding toppings and even crusts. There’s regular crust, or you can opt for golden crust (very sweet), “nude” crust (no crust) or a cheese-stuffed crust. On any pie. For like two dollars extra. I guess, to its detriment, Mr. Pizza Factory can get a bit expensive. Tonight’s dinner for two included one meat lovers pie (large, ten slices) and one “potato gold” pie (regular, eight slices), and a soda for Sari. It cost $46.55. But I’ve got lunch and dinner for tomorrow and I’ll be very happy eating my leftovers. As far as gourmet pizza is concerned, it definitely earns my seal of approval. Tomato Pie in Silverlake, though, takes the cake for the best New York-style pizza in Los Angeles. Massa does the best (and only, that I know of) Chicago style. Deano’s in the grove was cool when all the pizzas I could ever want were free, but it’s not good enough for me to actually pay for it. Andiamo was okay. I’ve yet to try Mozza or Capricio, but they’re both going to be consumed soon. After that, I’ll finally be able to officially tell you the best pizza in LA, a city that might very well have the worst pizza in America. So, I guess, this is all for naught, because no matter what pizza I choose as the best in the city, it’ll still be worse than the shittiest NY/NJ parlor your could find.
