Scharpling & Wurster – The Best You Can Do Is Be Worse Than The Best Show Compact Disc

This CD-r was given away as a DJ premium for listeners who donated to the WFMU marathon in March of 2007. Although my actual donation ($75!) was made during “Seven Second Delay”, that show’s premium wasn’t nearly as appealing as the one for Tom Scharpling’s “The Best Show On WFMU”, which included a sticker, a New Jersey-shaped magnet, and an hour of new Scharpling and Jon Wurster material. The whole thing came housed in a brown paper lunchbag that was signed “Thanks” from Tom, who also took the time to draw a large heart on the bag.

The tracks are described on the insert as containing two calls from Pudge, “a unique young man”, Philly Boy Roy reading a chapter from his series of motivational tapes, a phone call taken from Tom’s “other” show (“Newbridge Now”) involving his longtime foe Zachary Brimstead, ESQ., and old answering machine messages from Consolidated Cardboard — the company where Tom works.

While not nearly as funny as some of the other Scharpling & Wurster comedy albums, the fact that this was limited to folks who donated to the radio station makes it somewhat hard to find, and it’s certainly not unfunny. Zachary Brimstead is the closest the duo come to reaching the heights of routines from their previous CDs. Bonus: the final track of the album ends with a LOST reference.
