I promised the unreleased Chorchazade album Death Is Eeklo in my post last Friday, and I aim to never disappoint my readership, so here it is. Thankfully for you, I’m super-tired today. I was going to wait until Friday to post the album, but my inability to work my brain has lead me to break my vow and post it today.
I happen to enjoy listening to Death Is Eeklo much more than I do Made To Be Devoured (which I still consider to be a phenomenal album). The production value is a good-deal higher, and the quality of the songs are much higher. If you enjoy the Aaah, You Are As Light As A Feather EP, I am fairly sure you’re going to go nuts for this record. It harnesses the darkened ambience of the latter record while increasing the immediacy of the vocals. There is a lushness to these songs that is not discernible on Made To Be Devoured due to its lo-fi, Sonic Youth-like messiness. It sounds like a combination of The Fall, Joy Division, XTC, and PiL. I don’t know of any bands off the top of my head that site Chorchazade as a direct influence, but you can probably name a dozen or more bands whose sounds are steeped in this same atmosphere. I guess what I’m getting at is, it’s a pretty masterful album, and if any unsung band deserves acclaim for their accomplishments, it is Chorchazade. I hope you enjoy this recording.
