There is a busy week ahead of me. There is a busy week ahead of us all, I suppose, but since this is the place where I write about myself, I am most comfortable asserting things about my own life. I hope you understand.
Some of you readers are very nice, by the way. I just thought I’d throw that out there. I’ve never really said “thanks” for all your kind e-mails and such, and this is as good an opportunity as I can get, considering this is probably going to be a fairly successful mix tape. Speaking of which…I don’t want to waste any more of your time. Here it is!
RULES for uninitiated noobs: With 100MB of webspace, I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods or Zunes or Kingklangs or whatever the industry is currently pushing on you. Sometimes there will be themes that link all the songs together, other times I’ll just throw songs at a wall (not literally) and see what sticks. This week I’m looking at my favorite lyricists. While not a complete list (remember, I’m working within a spacial limit), this is a pretty accurate representation of who I most admire for their lyrics. Several of these might seem obvious (Cohen, Waits, Young), so I apologize for not challenging any norms. I tried to pick some unconventional tracks (especially with Young, Buckley, Malkmus, and possibly with Drake). No Bob Dylan here. I happen to think he’s overrated, but apparently I’m in the minority. I think there’s a pretty good mix of older canonical writers and new-school writers, and hope you enjoy! Note: This is not a ranked list! These songs will be removed if desired by the band or those who represent them. Let me know and I will gladly comply. The goal of this endeavor, as always, is to pique your interest in these artists so you’ll support the artists and buy their albums.
