Record Review: The Ghost Orchid: An Introduction To EVP

Every so often, I come across an item that genuinely freaks me out. Two examples off the top of my head would be: the old cemetery that developers built around when constructing my current place of residence, and the Ashlee Simpson Show (zing!). I like to think my eyes and ears are constantly open to discovering new fascinations that make me ill as much as they intrigue me. So, you could imagine my surprise when someone slipped me a copy of The Ghost Orchid: An Introduction to EVP.

If you’re unschooled in EVP, it stands for Electronic Voice Phenomenon. It’s a paranormal mystery (like UFOs, or poltergeist) that occurs when voices of aliens or dead people show up in recordings or radio broadcasts. This company called The ParaPsychic Acoustic Research Cooperative released a CD that guides listeners through seventy-something tracks of strange, unexplainable voices. It’s been blowing my mind late at night when I’m trying to go to sleep. Sure, I find it highly suspicious that these voices all happened to show up on the recordings of researchers specifically hunting for instances of EVP, but then again, I don’t even believe in ghosts or aliens. Did you see that movie with Michael Keaton in it? It was awful! Whatever, the record is a total mind-fuck, and I wanted to share it with you. You got a problem with that?
