I decided against seeing Jackie-O Motherfucker last night at the last minute. I arrived in the city at about five o’clock and suddenly realized that I’d rather spend what little money I have to see Magnolia Electric Co. and Destroyer on Tuesday than a band I’ve seen three times and are very hit or miss. Anyone who’s seen Jackie-O can attest to the fact that sometimes it’s incredible and sometimes it’s four or five stoned people getting lost in their own heads and not coming up with anything interesting. So after some time walking around the St. Marks area and surrounding streets, I decided to hike over to The Avalon on 20th and 6th to see if I could score some tickets to Tuesday’s show. Naturally, I arrived only to find out that the Avalon box office is at Irving Plaza. Duh! Why wouldn’t it be?!
As I started to walk back to Irving Plaza between 15th and 16th, I randomly decided to call Marsha and toy with her about her lack of contact in the past few weeks. She said, “Oh I’m over on 25th and 1st waiting for Zoya, you should come say hi!” So as I was half-way back to my destination I had to turn around and double-time all the way over to the Hunter dorms. I sat and mostly listened to them talk for maybe ten minutes, and then they left and I walked down to Irving Plaza while on the phone with Jet. There was a Ray Davies show going on, so I had to sneak into the box office, but I managed to get a ticket (as well as two tickets for the Mono/Pelican show in May) and usurp the billion dollar Ticketmaster surcharge…
“For me, ‘indie’ died the day I tried to get tickets to a MEC/Destroyer show only to find out that tickets were being sold by a subsidiary of Ticketmaster’s, which sells a fourteen dollar ticket with a six dollar surcharge. Remember the days of the $8 show with no surcharges? That was ‘indie'”.
…Afterwards, I went to Rocks In Your Head in SoHo and got the Psychic Ills album as well as the Spacemen 3 / Spiritualized book. The guy who works there recognized me and we talked about those bands for a few minutes (as well as the Contortions, he’s got a sweet concert poster hanging behind the wall in a hidden little area). He even gave me a free 7″ by a band called Crystal Stilts that includes three songs that will be on their next album. I can get along with just about anybody! Except for YOU, of course…
Z, McGoff and his lady friend came over last night to hang out. Z drank Steel Reserve and I had a bomber of Rogue Chipotle Ale (which wasn’t very good at all). I fell asleep relatively early.
