Hello kiddies. I have arrived in Providence in one piece. Hopefully I will return home intact. The amount of drinking has already eclipsed what I expected, and with a blizzard coming this weekend I don’t even really know what the hell is going to happen next. It’ll be hilarious, I’m sure. If you know anything about my life, I usually end up in pretty ridiculous situations that are hard to imagine.
I hopped in my car last night and stopped quickly for gas and a bacon double cheeseburger before officially hitting the road. There were not many cars on the highway, so it was a smooth ride. I stopped near Mystic, CT for a bathroom break (thanks a lot, 800oz. Burger King soda) and pulled up outside Ian’s apartment at about 10:30. There was cold beer awaiting my arrival. We spun a couple records and watched some TV before Ian put on a DVD about Punk Rock that was alright for a while and then it started to suck. The segments on The Stooges and the MC5 and the New York Dolls were pretty cool, but they didn’t pay enough attention to Television, and when they jumped to the London Punk scene and then American “Hardcore Punk” it started to suck. We drank Belgian ales, stouts, and before you knew it, it was 3:30 or 4:00am. I passed out on the couch while God knows what movie was on TV.
Someone rang the bell to deliver a FedEx package at about 9am, but I wasn’t awake until shortly after 11am, which still feels sort of early for me. We sat around watching Cable Guy for a while before driving up to Attleboro, MA to walk around Newbury Comics and a very large liquor store called Yankee Liquors, where we stocked up on more booze for tonight. Purchased a bottle of Sam Adams Chocolate Bock to bring home, a six-pack of Left Hand Milk Stout and a bottle of Sam Smith’s Oatmeal Stout for tonight. Ian picked up a six pack of the Milk Stout and a bottle of Sam Adams Triple Bock.
We drove into Olneyville and hung out at Armageddon Shop for a while. I found two Unwound records (Repetition and New Plastic Ideas) as well as two Byrds records (Younger Than Yesterday and The Notorious Byrd Brothers). We talked to the manager about his business and laughed as we flipped through the new Le Tigre calendar he got in the mail. I picked up some free local magazine and we left.
Back in the car, up the hill, past RISD, and parked right on the corner of Thayer Street, looked at another record store and had lunch. Nothing too impressive, really. I think we’re moving very slow today. I can’t wait to see what the hell Sunday morning is going to be like, especially with 14 inches of snow on the ground.
So we sat around this pizza joint called Antonio’s for a while talking and decided that there was no way in hell we were going to Newport Storm to drink four pints now. Instead, we hopped back in the car and we’re now waiting for Justin to arrive. The fridge has been re-stocked, and I have no idea where the hell this night is going.
Tomorrow is the Extreme Beer Festival. Oh yeah, and a Blizzard.
Should be quite the experience!
Pray for me.
