someone found an egg outside last night. it was too big to be a chicken egg. it was too small to be a dinosaur egg. it was too hard to be a normal egg. we are not sure what is inside the egg. where did it come from? where was it going? it certainly did not fall out of a tree to land in the driveway by the garage… maybe a small animal was going to eat the egg, and left it behind or dropped it. do deer lay eggs? do skunks? we get a lot of those around here. still, we thought it was best not to touch the egg because mother birds will not return for her egg if it has been touched. then we all touched the egg. whoops. it was heavier than a regular egg. we placed in the dirt so a car wouldn’t roll over it. someone said to take it home and keep it warm. i asked if the microwave was a good place for it. they did not laugh. will nature take its course and will the egg hatch? what will be born? a goose or a robin or a squirrel? or will some sly raccoon return to finish what it started? no one knows for sure. not even the egg. the only thing anyone truly knows for certain is that one day we’re all going to die.
